Globalization and English in Indonesia

Nowadays, we are entering the era of Globalization. In this globalization era, English is now very important in every aspect of live. That also happens in Indonesia, as globalization now developed recently, people need English as their global communication and help them in technology. Ayo Bamgbose (2001) said that the main importance of global Englishes is to achieve the viable international communication.  According to that fact, government tried to follow this trend by making a policy that open up International-Standard School (Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional) to produce graduates that can compete in the global field.
This policy has been being a realization in Indonesia although this concept is still experimentation. International-Standard School (Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional) is not yet applied to all school in Indonesia because there are a lot of challenges to make this concept works well. The first challenge is that the students are not ready yet to get involved in this program. Then, it will cost so much for the parents because it needs to hire more teachers. And the main challenge is the teacher itself, it needs teachers that are qualified to teach, and there are not many teachers who qualified in Indonesia. Beside the challenges, International-Standard School (Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional) is also give many advantages. The graduates of it can compete in international field because they have prepared for it. it will also affects to our country, with the graduates that is globally occupied in international field, it will makes Indonesia viewed as a developed country. With It, it’s also proved that global englishes work well.
To bring it into reality it needs teachers that are qualified to teach in International-Standard School (Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional). Since it is International-Standard School (Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional), the teachers that are needed of course those who can actively teach using English as their language to deliver the materials. The needed of teachers here can be solved by hiring native English speaking teacher or nonnative English speaking teacher. There are strengths and weaknesses in hiring NSET orNNSET to teach Indonesian school.
Mihyon Jeon and Jiyoon Lee (2006) in their journal “Hiring native-speaking English teachers in East Asian countries” stated that hiring native speaking English teachers (NSETs) is one of the most efficient ways to improve local student English proficiency. In plenary session 2 of the 5th international seminar that is held in balairung utama UKSW Monday, 21 Nov 2011 - 13.00-14.00, George Braine also said that native speaking teacher are “superior” to nonnative speaking teachers. I do agree with the statement that the ideal teacher of English is a native speaker. Native speaker of course has the ability in English better than nonnative speaker, so that they would teach English with the perfect knowledge than the nonnative speaking teacher. Yet, when they have to teach local student that learn English as their foreign language, I think we can’t say that the superiority of native speaker teacher is more suitable to teach the local students. They can’t be better than nonnative teacher because they don’t know the culture of local students. They also hindered by the communication in delivering their material.
